Lewis Andrew Gibbs, 94, died April 20, 2024. The eldest of four children born to Theodore Voges Gibbs and Dorothy Roach Gibbs, Lew graduated from Kiskiminetas Springs School in Saltsburg, PA before attending Wesley College in Dover, DE, and Heidelberg University. He enlisted in the United States Navy in June ,1951 and served aboard an LST stationed in Sasebo, Japan during the Korean War. Following his military service he was employed by the Hoover Company.
A lifelong member of Christ Presbyterian Church, Canton, Lew served on both the Session and Board of Deacons and was a member of the Chancel Choir. His memberships included the Stark County Humane Society, the North Canton YMCA Health Club, and the American Polled Hereford Association.
In addition to his parents, Lew was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Betty Blosser Gibbs; his second wife of 12 years, Joanne Weisel Gibbs; a brother, Theodore Voges Gibbs Jr.; and a sister, Grace Gibbs Barnhart.
He is survived by a brother, Frederick Preyer Gibbs (Judy) of North Canton; three stepdaughters: Cathy Williamson of Sonoma, CA; Bonnie Weisel of San Francisco, CA; and Marty Clark of Canton; and several nieces and nephews.
Among his special interests were the polled Hereford cattle he raised on his farms and the music program at his church. With his wife Betty he established the Gibbs Music Fund to provide special concerts and other musical activities in the church. Other interests were dogs in general, with Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) at the top.
Memorial donations may be made to Gibbs Music Fund of Christ Presbyterian Church.
Services will be Friday, April 26 with calling hours from 12 to 1 p.m. in the church’s Westminster Hall, followed by a Witness to the Resurrection in the Sanctuary led by pastors Michael Wallace and Ben George.
